Day 30 of Searching the Psalms

Please share your thoughts in the comments below each day so that we can
learn and grow together as we seek to know God and live justly.

Psalm 30 (MSG)

1 I give you all the credit, God—
you got me out of that mess,
you didn’t let my foes gloat.

2-3 God, my God, I yelled for help
and you put me together.
God, you pulled me out of the grave,
gave me another chance at life
when I was down-and-out.

4-5 All you saints! Sing your hearts out to God!
Thank him to his face!
He gets angry once in a while, but across
a lifetime there is only love.
The nights of crying your eyes out
give way to days of laughter.

6-7 When things were going great
I crowed, “I’ve got it made.
I’m God’s favorite.
He made me king of the mountain.”
Then you looked the other way
and I fell to pieces.

8-10 I called out to you, God;
I laid my case before you:
“Can you sell me for a profit when I’m dead?
auction me off at a cemetery yard sale?
When I’m ‘dust to dust’ my songs
and stories of you won’t sell.
So listen! and be kind!
Help me out of this!”

11-12 You did it: you changed wild lament
into whirling dance;
You ripped off my black mourning band
and decked me with wildflowers.
I’m about to burst with song;
I can’t keep quiet about you.
God, my God,
I can’t thank you enough.

Comments

  1. David thanks God so beautifully for having mercy on him and delivering him from evil .

    There have been many times in my life when I have felt that I was going down into the pit.

    This is a really good psalm to sing or read over and over in times of great sadness, anger or mourning. It gives me hope and reminds me that it is God, and God alone, who can turn our mourning to joy.

    I believe that we forget this too often and look to other sources to fix the deep hurts in our lives. We turn to ourselves, our family and friends, mentors and leaders before we turn to God. I say this because that is what I did for much of my life. I have learned in my old age that turning to God is the First and Best thing we should do. How often do we exhaust all our sources before turning to God? (That is not to say, however, that we don't need or should not ask for support of others.)

    For me this is an ongoing conversion as my first inclination is to "fix" it myself. I must constantly ask God to make my heart turn first to Him in times of trouble.

  2. Psalm 30:5 is what speaks to me b/c it's one of those key Scriptures Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. used in his ministry. And through God, he will established us as a "strong mountain" and fill us with "joy". There's a lot of "weeping" on many levels in this season of life(repentance, grief for police brutality, something w my kids, etc) and joy doesn't always seem to come in the full measure I would like it "in the morning" but, I can sincerely say that I thank God for a lot more joy than expected and many moments this summer of him turning my mouring into dancing(ok, not quite dancing but a smile on my face again). Thank you, God!
