Day 29 of Searching the Psalms

Please share your thoughts in the comments below each day so that we can
learn and grow together as we seek to know God and live justly.

Psalm 29 (RSV)

1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
worship the Lord in holy array.

3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, upon many waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful,
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars,
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sir′ion like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness,
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9 The voice of the Lord makes the oaks to whirl,
and strips the forests bare;
and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king for ever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Comments

  1. Psalm 29 speaks to me Strength. It speaks of God’s mighty glory and power. God don’t play! All the things we are standing for and the injustices that we’re praying for God to end, He can handle them and bless His people with peace.

  2. This seems at first to me like a praise song glorifying God and His power.

    Then there is this odd line about the Lord's voice breaking the cedars which are powerful and strong and making them "skip like a calf" or the "beloved son of a unicorn" ( KJ and Douay).

    This puts me to mind of other bible verses where deer or hinds are leaping up or standing firmly on rock ( might be Isaiah but not sure of that). To me it is not just praising God for breaking the strong. It is making me think that God's voice -His Word- Jesus Christ and His Gospel are not here just for the poor and oppressed but as much, if not more for the powerful cedars to break their power so as to break their pride so that they can skip joyfully like calves and beloved sons to Christ and carry His yoke and eventually inherit the kingdom that the poor and meek already have.

  3. Thanks for your comments, Mom and Sister Allison! It's been a busy weekend for Fina and I with Anthony McClain's funeral on Saturday and then gotta turn it around and be a dad to have fun before end of the month and paintball all day on Sunday. Repetition of God's powerful strong "voice" 7x is what jumps out at me. He is speaking to the "heavenly beings" in v. 1 which could be "sons of gods" or angels or some say other gods but seems clear it's supernatural and strong in their own rite. Strength is also what speaks to me in this text in that we, along w/ heavenly beings, are to ascribe "strength" to God but we can pray and ask God to give His strength to "His people"(v.11). Ps 105:4 has been my text lately: Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His presence continually. It just rolls off my tongue as I've prayed it over and over for the last week and I desperately need His Strength for all things, especially in my life and my families' life, but also for all we are going through at our church and in our city.
