Day 23 of Searching the Psalms

Psalm 23 (MSG)

1-3 God, my shepherd!
I don’t need a thing.
You have bedded me down in lush meadows,
you find me quiet pools to drink from.
True to your word,
you let me catch my breath
and send me in the right direction.

4 Even when the way goes through
Death Valley,
I’m not afraid
when you walk at my side.
Your trusty shepherd’s crook
makes me feel secure.

5 You serve me a six-course dinner
right in front of my enemies.
You revive my drooping head;
my cup brims with blessing.

6 Your beauty and love chase after me
every day of my life.
I’m back home in the house of God
for the rest of my life.

  1. Psalm 23

I learned this verse from the King James Bible, at my mother's knee ( as well as Psalm 100 ). It is the consummate psalm for a walk on beautiful day or for just taking in "God's Grandeur". And ironically, it is just as perfect for a difficult day ahead or for life's hardest moments.

When I read it, I can see in my mind's eye, the green pasture, still water times of my life.
I can also see the valleys of shadows.

When I was younger , I could not see the table that was prepared for me, perhaps because I was experiencing difficult times or because I felt all alone or for a hundred other equally overwhelming reasons.

Now, at almost 72... ( even before I had my cataract surgery a year ago, haha!) my hindsight had already begun to clear enough to see the anointing of oil that had taken place, many times, throughout my difficulties. And I see now that it is still taking place, not so much because of the change in me, but because of His love, which never changes.

Old age is a good place for me now. I cannot say that I have no fears, but the path is lot clearer these days and I am willing to let the Good Shepherd take the lead.
