Day 20 of Searching the Psalms

Please share your thoughts in the comments below each day so that we can
learn and grow together as we seek to know God and live justly.

Psalm 20 (NIV)

1 May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
2 May he send you help from the sanctuary
and grant you support from Zion.
3 May he remember all your sacrifices
and accept your burnt offerings.
4 May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all your plans succeed.
5 May we shout for joy over your victory
and lift up our banners in the name of our God.

May the Lord grant all your requests.

6 Now this I know:
The Lord gives victory to his anointed.
He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary
with the victorious power of his right hand.
7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
8 They are brought to their knees and fall,
but we rise up and stand firm.
9 Lord, give victory to the king!
Answer us when we call!

Comments

  1. Psalm 20

A beautiful blessing to call down on a loved one but again my old Douay provokes some different thoughts especially verse 5 which reads, "May He give thee according to thy own heart."

As soon as I read that, I was stopped dead in my tracks. NOT according to what my heart desires, but according to my own heart. Reminiscent of "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those..." and "what you do to the least...." and "do to others as you would have them..."

Now the psalm was probably sung to David for all his known goodness of heart, but we know later on that his heart faltered and that he plotted and succeeded in murder. But David's story shows us that even murderers can be forgiven if their hearts return to the Lord. Jesus died for the good and the bad and "according to the multitude of His tender mercies" He will "blot out the iniquity" of those who have "a contrite and humbled heart."
