Day 1 of Searching the Psalms

Psalm 1 (ESV)


1 Blessed is the man who walks

 not in the counsel of the wicked,

nor stands in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree planted by streams of

that yields its fruit in its season,

and its leaf does not wither.

In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,

but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked will perish.

    "Happiness" seems to also come our way by what we do NOT do (v.1). Brad's test.

    Psalm 1
    I love the visual of the tree by the water, reminds me of a beautiful spot I once frequented with my children 45 years ago with large willow trees along a stream.

    The psalm seems to talk about only two people and I think most people fall somewhere between the two.

    Can any of us say that 1) we have never walked in the counsel of the unGodly or 2)never stood in the way of sinners or 3) never sat in the chair of pestilence? (wait a minute, what is the "chair of pestilence"?) I am reading the Catholic Douay Bible. Pestilence brings mass destruction. I just pulled out my Mom's King James and it says "seat of the scornful". . I can understand that! And I will admit that I have accepted unGodly counsel and sinned and boy! have I been scornful!

    And on the righteous man side I cannot claim that I have always desired (or KJV-delighted in) the will of God, though I have often, and usually in anguish, cried, "Thy will be done." Now, in my old age, I do a lot better at meditating on God's will and law but for me it is an ongoing conversion. My goal is the righteousness that the psalmist speaks of, and he does a good job of telling us the do's and don'ts, but I am definitely not there yet. But these are some really good guidelines! Lord, receive all my will.

    In the Easy Bible, verse 1 said: " If anyone does not do what wicked people him to do". I love it! So easy. We need to discern by a person's behavior, speech, lifestyle, or God's Word if they are wicked, and don't do what they tell us to do. In this season of so much going on around us, we need to evaluate and discern what we hear from: all forms of media, The President, Congress, and our Spiritual leaders; and decide if what they are saying is positive or negative and do what God leads us to do. We should take every opportunity to lean into God's Word and listen to his counsel and the counsel of the wise, which is why I'm so excited about this study. PC

    Psalm 2

    Well this one had me singing Hande'ls Messiah after I switched from my Douay to the old King James. Why do the Gentiles ( nations) rage? Then and now?

    In the Douay , it says they stand against Christ, in the KJ it says the annointed one ( which I believe is the Greek definition of Christ). Same difference. It makes sense that this is why people and/ or nations rage - they stand against Christ. It could be that they just don't know of Him, but I actually think that is not it. I believe that sadly there really are people that stand against Christ.

    The final lines give me two really great guidelines for dealing with other's non-belief or "rage" (and even myown!!) #1 embrace discipline and #2 trust in Him.

    Lord, help me to discipline my heart and my mind, my words and my actions with Your love. For" it is only love that lends value to our actions''(Faustina Kowalska ) Jesus, in you I trust.
